The Map of Forgotten Lands
Chapter 1: The Arrival
The rain hammered down as Leah peered through the fogged-up windshield. Her hands gripped the steering wheel tightly, knuckles pale. The road twisted like a serpent, each turn swallowed by
shadows cast by skeletal trees. The GPS had stopped working an hour ago, leaving her with only the crumpled, yellowed map she found in her grandmother’s attic.Leah didn’t know why the map had called to her. She just knew it felt... alive. Something about the curling ink patterns and the faint smell of soil and decay drew her in. She unfolded it again, tracing the black lines leading to a place labeled The Forgotten Lands.
A crack of thunder jolted her. The car sputtered and came to a sudden halt. Leah cursed under her breath and stepped out into the downpour. Her boots sank into the mud, and as she looked up, the silhouette of a house emerged from the gloom. It was ancient, towering with broken windows like jagged teeth.
Driven by desperation, Leah grabbed her flashlight and trudged toward the house. She didn’t see the eyes watching her from the second-story window.
Chapter 2: The Invitation
The door creaked as Leah pushed it open. The air inside was heavy, saturated with dust and rot. Furniture lay draped in white sheets, resembling specters frozen in time. An ornate mirror loomed in the hallway, cracked through the middle.
“Hello?” Leah’s voice echoed.
No answer.
She ventured deeper. Her flashlight flickered as she entered the parlor. A fire had been lit in the stone hearth, though no one was in sight. Above the mantle hung a portrait of a pale woman in a black dress, her eyes hollow and fixed on Leah.
Suddenly, the map in Leah’s hand began to hum. She dropped it, startled, but it didn’t stop. The lines glowed faintly, and new paths seemed to etch themselves across its surface.
A cold voice whispered from behind her.
“You’ve come.”
Chapter 3: The Keeper
Leah spun around to see a man dressed in a faded suit. His skin was grayish, as though he had been carved from stone.
“Who are you?” she demanded.
“The Keeper. You hold the map. Now, you must face what lies within it.”
Before Leah could respond, the room shifted. Walls stretched and twisted. The fire died, and shadows consumed the light. The Keeper vanished, leaving Leah alone with the hum of the map.
Chapter 4: The Path
The map directed Leah through the house. She followed its glow, navigating corridors that should not have existed. Rooms changed locations. Stairs led nowhere. She found herself retracing her steps, though the paintings on the walls had shifted, their eyes bleeding ink.
She finally reached a door marked with strange symbols. The handle burned cold under her touch.
“Open it.” The Keeper’s voice echoed from the shadows.
Inside, a staircase spiraled downward into darkness. Leah descended, each step creaking beneath her weight.
Chapter 5: The Depths
The basement was a labyrinth. Candles flickered along the walls, casting dancing shadows. At the center stood an altar made of bones, the map spread across it.
Leah stepped closer, her breath shallow. The map’s glow pulsed like a heartbeat. She placed her hand on it, and the room shuddered.
Whispers rose. The walls bled. And from the shadows emerged creatures with hollow eyes and twisted limbs.
Chapter 6: The Curse
The creatures swarmed, their skeletal fingers grasping for Leah. She grabbed the map and ran, its light repelling the horrors momentarily. But the walls closed in, the house itself alive and hungry.
Leah stumbled back into the parlor, slamming the door behind her. The Keeper stood by the fire, now a roaring inferno.
“The Forgotten Lands demand sacrifice,” he said.
“I won’t be your pawn!” Leah shouted.
She threw the map into the fire, and the house screamed.
Chapter 7: The Escape
The ground shook as the house began to collapse. Leah sprinted through the twisting corridors, dodging falling beams and shattering glass. The front door loomed ahead, but the Keeper appeared once more.
“You can’t leave!” he roared.
Leah grabbed a shard of glass and slashed at him. He dissolved into ash, and she burst through the door just as the house imploded.
Chapter 8: The Aftermath
Leah awoke in her car, the morning sun piercing through the trees. The house was gone, replaced by an overgrown field.
The map lay in the passenger seat, blank.
But as she started the engine, a faint hum filled the air. She looked down to see new lines appearing on the map.
Leah’s nightmare wasn’t over.
The End.
